Project overview

Eastoli Infrastructure Renewals delivered the construction of launch and receival pits on the existing Unitywater Kawana Ocean Outfall Pipeline to facilitate pigging and inline inspection of the 750mm pipeline.

The inspection process used specialised pigging equipment to detect corrosion, cracking, and remaining wall thickness, allowing Unitywater to assess the condition and future service life of the asset.

Scope of works

The launch pit involved excavations up to 5m deep, requiring:

  • Large shoring boxes
  • Sheet piling
  • Dewatering systems
  • Protection of adjacent underground assets

Once the existing pipeline was exposed, sections were removed and replaced with new DN750 DICL assemblies, valves, reinforced thrust blocks, and custom fabricated fittings to facilitate pigging and scanning operations.

Cleaning pigs were then launched through the pipeline toward the receival pit.

Launch pit works

Extensive planning and coordination were undertaken to deliver the project safely and within tight deadlines prior to the arrival of overseas scanning specialists.

Works included:

  • Traffic and pedestrian management
  • Stakeholder communication
  • Environmental and safety controls
  • Coordination of specialist contractors and equipment

Receival pit works

Due to the site’s proximity to the ocean and neighbouring properties, additional measures included:

  • Dewatering spear installation
  • Noise mitigation and sound blankets
  • Community communication
  • Enhanced traffic management

An approximately 16m-long shoring box assembly was installed before excavation and pipeline modifications were completed to facilitate receival of the pigging and scanning equipment.

Restoration and completion

Following completion of the works, both sites were backfilled, compacted, and restored to equal or better condition than prior to construction.

Reinstatement works included:

  • Turf and landscaping restoration
  • Footpaths, kerbs, and gutters
  • Roadways and carparks

The project was successfully delivered safely, efficiently, and within program requirements, enabling critical condition assessment of the Kawana Ocean Outfall Pipeline.
